Very clean aromas of blackberry and juniper, with hints of fresh herbs and metallic minerals. Medium-bodied, with a fresh palate, well-defined tannins and a long, mineral-driven finish. Very classy Morellino. Best after 2004. 2,915 cases made. 90 points James Suckling for The Wine Spectator, Online Oct 15, 2003.
Deep ruby with a violet hue. Engaging raspberry fruit on the nose, with a hint of vanilla. Fresh and full on the palate, with rhubarb, sage and other Mediterranean herbs predominating; conveys a slightly wild character. Mouthcoating but dusty tannins accompany the ample finish. 88 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, Jul/Aug 03.
The 2001 Morellino di Scansano Poggio Bronzone, features very ripe, almost roasted, plum and black cherry fruit, a heady nose, and a firm and energetic palate with a few dusty tannins to resolve on the finish. Belguardo is the property of the Mazzei family, owners of Castello di Fonterutoli in Chianti, among the first to move into the Maremma in search of new territory to plant vineyards. The vines are still young here, and there is unquestionably much margin for improvement in the wines. Drink: 2005-2010. 87 points Wine Advocate # 152
